Hunan in two halves: the river towns of the west — Fenghuang by night, Furong built over a waterfall, a Miao village — then three nights at Wulingyuan for Tianmen Mountain, the Bailong lift and the sandstone pillars that inspired Avatar. A high-speed train brings you to Guangzhou for a day of Cantonese streets and markets before flying home.
Changsha → Fenghuang → Furong Town → Zhangjiajie → Guangzhou
Day 01
Meet on arrival at Changsha airport and transfer to the hotel. The rest of the day is free.
Day 02
Visit Orange Isle in the Xiang River with a view across to Yuelu Mountain, then drive west to Fenghuang with a lunch stop in Changde. Check in at the ancient town and spend the evening on Dongzheng snack street, at the North Gate Tower and the stepping stones across the Tuo River.
Day 03
Drive to Dehang, a Miao village set in the gorges of western Hunan, then continue to Furong Town, the old riverside settlement built above a waterfall. Dinner is taken in Furong Town and the old town is lit after dark.
Day 04
Morning at leisure with lunch on your own, then drive to Tianmen Mountain National Forest Park for Tianmen Cave and the glass skywalk. Afterwards visit the Seventy-Two Wonder Building before checking in at Wulingyuan. When the park switches its lights on after dark, the Heaven’s Gate stairway can be seen lit from below; this depends on weather and the park’s notice.
Day 05
A full day in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park. Ride the Bailong Elevator up to Yuanjiajie for the Qiankun Pillar, the sandstone column that inspired the floating mountains in Avatar. After lunch continue to Tianzi Mountain and the West Sea Stone Forest.
Day 06
Walk the valley floor along Golden Whip Stream, passing Four Gates Surrounded by Water and the Ten-Mile Gallery. After lunch take a boat on Baofeng Lake, a reservoir enclosed by peaks.
Day 07
Transfer to Zhangjiajie West station for the high-speed train to Guangzhou. In the afternoon walk Beijing Road, the city’s pedestrian shopping street, then check in.
Day 08
Start at Huacheng Square for views of Canton Tower, then Yongqing Fang, the restored Xiguan quarter known for its food, and Shamian Island with its colonial-era buildings and China’s first five-star hotel. Finish at the dried-goods wholesale market for herbs, dried seafood and tea.
