Overview

Malaysia is where Malay, Chinese, Indian and Peranakan life share the same street. This journey follows that street from the old port of Malacca to the food stalls of Penang, with two nights inside the oldest rainforest on earth and three nights on a private island to finish. You travel with your own English-speaking guide and driver; days have room in them, breakfast is included every day, and most lunches and dinners are left open so you can eat where the locals eat.

Malacca → Kuala Lumpur → Taman Negara → Cameron Highlands → Ipoh → Penang → Pangkor Laut

Day by day

Day 01

Arrival — Malacca

Your driver meets you at Kuala Lumpur International Airport and takes you straight to Malacca, the old port where this story begins. Depending on your arrival time, an easy walk along the river and — if the light allows — sunset at the Straits Mosque, which appears to float on the water. Dinner is yours; we’ll point you to a good Nyonya table.

Meals: —
Overnight: Malacca · Hotel Puri(Standard)

Day 02

Malacca — Kuala Lumpur

Morning among the Dutch Square, St Paul’s Hill and the A Famosa gate, then the Baba & Nyonya Heritage Museum — a family townhouse that explains Peranakan life better than any book. Nyonya lunch, a wander down Jonker Street, then on to Kuala Lumpur. Evening free.

Meals: Breakfast · Lunch
Overnight: Kuala Lumpur · Oasia Suites(Standard)

Day 03

Indian Kuala Lumpur

Begin in Brickfields at the Sri Kandaswamy Kovil, where a priest offers a short blessing for the journey ahead, then walk Little India. Lunch is a banana-leaf meal, eaten by hand if you like. Afternoon in Chinatown and Central Market, then the National Mosque (robes provided). In the evening your guide walks you to Jalan Alor, the street-food strip — order what you like.

Meals: Breakfast · Lunch
Overnight: Kuala Lumpur

Day 04

Batu Caves — Sekinchan — Kuala Selangor

Batu Caves early, before the crowds. Then the coast: Sekinchan’s fishing harbour and jetty and a look at a working fish market from the quayside; seafood lunch in the village is the obvious choice. In the afternoon, a rice mill and the paddy fields, and the old hill fort at Bukit Melawati. At dusk a boat into the mangroves to watch Brahminy kites — we observe, we never feed. Dinner by the river, then a second boat, in the dark, for the fireflies. Late return to Kuala Lumpur.

Meals: Breakfast · Dinner
Overnight: Kuala Lumpur

Day 05

Kuala Lumpur — Taman Negara

Into the interior. After lunch you cross the river to your lodge on the edge of the national park. Late afternoon with the Batek people at their settlement: the blowpipe, fire-making, how a family lives here. Dinner at the lodge, then a guided night walk to see what the forest does after dark.

Meals: Breakfast · Dinner
Overnight: Taman Negara · Mutiara Taman Negara

Day 06

Taman Negara — trek and longboat

A morning trek up Bukit Teresek with your private park guide. After lunch, a longboat upriver to the Lata Berkoh rapids and the Kelah fish sanctuary (subject to water level), guide on board. Evening free.

Meals: Breakfast · Lunch · Dinner
Overnight: Taman Negara

Day 07

Taman Negara — Cameron Highlands

Up into the cool hills. Afternoon at the BOH tea estate: the plantation, the factory, and a cup of what you’ve just seen picked. Evening free — the local steamboat (hot pot) dinner in Brinchang is the thing to do here.

Meals: Breakfast
Overnight: Cameron Highlands · Century Pines

Day 08

Cameron Highlands

Morning on Gunung Brinchang and the Mossy Forest, a cloud forest at 2,000 metres where everything is wrapped in moss. Afternoon is yours: the butterfly farm, the market, or nothing at all.

Meals: Breakfast
Overnight: Cameron Highlands

Day 09

Cameron Highlands — Ipoh: tin-mining day

Descend to the Kinta Valley, once the richest tin field in the world. Board TT5, the last working tin dredge, then lunch in Ipoh’s old town. Afternoon: Perak Cave Temple, the old town on foot, and Han Chin Pet Soo, the former Hakka tin miners’ club. Evening: hot springs beneath the limestone cliffs, after dark.

Meals: Breakfast
Overnight: Ipoh · Sunway Lost World Hotel

Day 10

Ipoh — Penang

Afternoon in George Town: the Khoo Kongsi clan house and the street art. In the evening your guide takes you to Gurney Drive’s hawker centre and shows you how to order — then leaves you to it.

Meals: Breakfast
Overnight: Penang · Berjaya Penang(Standard)

Day 11

Penang heritage and Penang Hill

Fort Cornwallis, Little India and the Pinang Peranakan Mansion in the morning. Afternoon: Kek Lok Si temple and the funicular up Penang Hill for the view over the Straits. Evening free.
