Overview
Yunnan from the red earth of Dongchuan up to the Tibetan plateau: Erhai Lake and Dali old town, Lijiang with Shuhe, Baisha and Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, two days in Shangri-La for Pudacuo and Napa Lake, then back down through the Bai and Yi towns of Xizhou and Chuxiong.

Day by day
Day 02
Dongchuan Red Land
A drive of around two and a half hours to Dongchuan, where terraced fields on red-earth hills are farmed in alternating strips of crop and fallow. Stops at the classic viewpoints of Luosiwan, Qicai Po (Seven-Colour Slope) and Luoxia Gou (Sunset Valley). Return to Kunming.
Day 03
Kunming to Dali · Shuanglang · Erhai Lake
Travel to Dali. Afternoon in Shuanglang on the eastern shore of Erhai Lake, with a walk along the lakeside and a stop at the white-and-blue ‘Dali Santorini’ viewpoint for photos.
Day 04
Dali Old Town · Erhai S-bend · on to Lijiang
Morning in Dali Old Town, the walled centre of Bai culture. Drive the Erhai S-bend, a lakeside road popular for photos, then continue north to Lijiang.
Day 05
Lashihai · Shuhe Old Town
Lashihai, a wetland lake outside Lijiang, with the choice of a horse ride (optional) or a walk along the shore. Afternoon in Shuhe Old Town, a quieter stop on the old Tea Horse Road.
Day 06
Yuhu scenic area · Baisha Old Town
Yuhu scenic area at the foot of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (park shuttle included), with the lake set against the peaks. Then Baisha, the oldest and quietest of the Naxi towns around Lijiang.
Day 07
Lijiang to Shangri-La · Pudacuo National Park
Drive up to Shangri-La through grassland and mountain scenery. Afternoon at Pudacuo National Park, walking the boardwalks around Shudu Lake and Bita Lake.
Day 08
Dukezong Ancient Town · Napa Lake
Dukezong Ancient Town, the old Tibetan quarter of Shangri-La, with the giant prayer wheel on the hill and a view over the rooftops. Afternoon on the Yila grassland at Napa Lake, a seasonal lake and pasture.
Day 09
Shangri-La to Chuxiong · Xizhou · Chuxiong old town
A long travel day back down towards Kunming. Stop at Xizhou, a Bai town of courtyard houses near Dali, then continue to Chuxiong and its old town, a centre of Yi culture and traditional architecture.
Day 10
Kunming · Daguan Park · Old Street · Nanping
Return to Kunming. Daguan Park on the shore of Dianchi Lake, then the restored Kunming Old Street. Free time on Nanping pedestrian street for shopping and local food.
Day 11
Departure
Transfer to Kunming airport at the agreed time for the flight home.
